Hanya studied History of Art at The Courtauld in London. It was here that she developed an obsession with colour, even writing her dissertation on green pigments in 17th-century Venice. After a brief foray into midwifery, Hanya found solace from overstretched NHS shifts in her paints, mixing watercolours from her flat in Stoke Newington.
One day, her sister asked her to paint a pomegranate for her supper club menu. From this fateful fruit, a business was born and Handcrafted by Hanya took shape. Inspired by the natural world and classic works, Hanya is more likely to open up a vintage recipe book than scroll through Instagram to spark her imagination.
In 2022, Hanya moved to sunny California with her husband. Most days, she’s on her deck in Whitley Heights, Los Angeles, soaking up the sun and watching the hummingbirds flitter past while working on her latest designs. Her dedicated team of packers back in the UK ensure her designs are beautifully wrapped, ribboned, and sent off (with tracking) around the globe. All her work is dedicated to her late grandmother Anne Cox, an artist whose dynamic life drawings and sprawling African vistas adorn Hanya’s walls wherever her travels take her.
